As we commemorate Women’s Month, let’s stand together in support of victims of gender-based violence: Join us at Sebokeng Court to stand with the family of Relebohile Mofokeng

Women and children continue to die while the President refuses to be a champion of a strong GBVF bill. President Ramaphosa has to do right by all women and children living in this country and give justice to victims of Gender-Based Violence

As we commemorate Women’s Month, let’s stand together in support of victims of gender-based violence: Join us at Sebokeng Court to stand with the family of Relebohile Mofokeng.

It has been five months since the brutal murder of Relebohile Mofokeng (19), who was sexually assaulted and suffocated to death. As we observe #WomensMonth, we need to remind our leaders that our justice system has to serve women; perpetrators should not feel emboldened to continue to harm due to the backlogs and failures of police and the law to protect the vulnerable.

On May 24, 2024, President Ramaphosa signed a watered-down GBVF bill into law. Although the bill is a crucial step in the right direction, it is missing key parts that will make it effective, like the lack of clarity on how the bill will be impactful on local and provincial levels.

Women and children continue to die while the President refuses to be a champion of a strong GBVF bill. President Ramaphosa has to do right by all women and children living in this country and give justice to victims of Gender-Based Violence.

As amandla.mobi, we are calling on the community to stand up against GBV by mobilizing at the next court appearance of the suspects in the brutal murder of Relebohile Mofokeng in the West Rand.

“amandla.mobi members are increasingly frustrated – and angry – at the lack of justice for GBV victims. This brutal incident that happened in Evaton is one of thousands of tragic incidents where women lose their lives at the hands of men. How long will we continue to be bystanders while the war on women’s bodies continues?” asked amandla.mobi co-ordinator Thabisile Miya.

Relebohile’s sister, Mpho Mofokeng, is pleading with the community at large to support her and her family on her quest for justice: “We will never forget that our beloved sister left this community in a body bag. We will not rest until justice is served.”

Join us next week Thursday, the 22nd of August, at 8:30 am, at Sebokeng Branch Court, where five of the accused, who are all out on bail, will appear on various charges of rape, murder and kidnapping

“We plead with the extended amandla.mobi community to heed the call and show up to support Relebohile’s family,” said Miya.

If you won’t be able to make it to court, please add your name to this petition to help end the continued slaughtering of women in this country, sign here: https://awethu.amandla.mobi/petitions/justicefotmome

Pictured below is a campaign organised by a petition starter in Evaton. These aren’t pictures of the crime scene; members organised this protest using props to depict how Mome Mofokeng (19) brutally lost her life.
