Emmy Award Winning documentary Miners Shot Down will finally be aired by the South African Broadcast Corporation (SABC) for the first time since it’s release in 2014. The SABC has agreed to broadcast the documentary on 13 August 2018 at 21:00pm.
The film explores the events that led to the massacre of 34 miners, with 10 others killed in the days before.
The broadcast of the documentary coincides with the sixth commemoration of the massacre.
“This is a victory for the widows and family members who travelled during the Farlam Commission of Inquiry, to the SABC and e.tv studios to hand over more than 4000 signatories of the amandla.mobi to screen Miners shot Down,” says Executive Director of amandla.mobi, Koketso Moeti.
“The public broadcaster reaches the majority of the population and not broadcasting this painful, award-winning was a disservice to the country. So, this is an important step being taken by the SABC, potentially evidencing a much more independent broadcaster. Notwithstanding the lives lost during the massacre, there is still a lot to be done to achieve justice for Marikana survivors, widows and the community at large,” she continued.
In December 2015, eNCA aired the documentary whilst free to air channel, e.tv screened it in January 2016.
“Miners Shot Down is one of the most important documentaries ever produced in South Africa.” concludes Moeti.
