South African premier of LGBTIQ film Under the Rainbow

In the documentary, Adie talks through her experiences and shows viewers first-hand what it is to be a lesbian in an unforgivingly homophobic society. It explores the total alienation that can come when one stays true to your heart - ridiculed, despised and ostracised by those around you who claim to love you.

Join Nigerian lesbian filmmaker Pamela Adie at AFDA in Braamfontein Werf on October 12, 2019, for the first ever South African public screening of her film documentary, ‘Under the Rainbow’.

While there are signs of progress, such as the recent decriminalisation of homosexuality in Botswana, life for the LGBTIQ community in many African states remains difficult – even dangerous.

This is what Adie highlights and challenges with her documentary, which uses her own journey of self-discovery to kickstart the conversation about coming out of the proverbial closet.

The screening will be followed by a conversation with Adie, who is currently involved in a legal process following the rejection of the registration of her organisation, ‘Lesbian Equality and Empowerment Initiatives’ for homophobic reasons.

She will be joined by Sibongile Ndashe, whose organisation is representing Adie, as well as veteran activist Phumi Mtetwa. Together they will explore the issues raised in the film and the need for transnational solidarity, using Adie’s case as a stepping stone.

“We are very excited to be co-hosting the screening and discussion with values-aligned partners. It is no secret that amandla.mobi has an internationalist orientation, so for us it is important that we not only know what is happening around the continent, but also open up possibilities for transnational solidarity,” explains amandla.mobi Executive Director Koketso Moeti.

“We look forward to welcoming Pamela, whose documentary is an important contribution that asserts the existence of lesbian Nigerians, whose struggles all too often happen in silence”, says Moeti.
